Suna Kıraç, with her strong vision, hard work and discipline, always defended the values she believed in and was successful to understand the main cause of the problems. Through this, she left a strong legacy, not only in the business world but also in the field of education.
Her efforts and determination contributed to the foundations of Türkiye’s most important educational institutions and civil society movements.
Suna Kıraç, lead the creation of Vehbi Koç Foundation, Koç School, Koç University, and Türkiye Educational Volunteers Foundation of Türkiye. Under the umbrella of Koç University, Kıraç also created many important scholarship programs including but not limited to the Anatolian Scholarship Program and Suna-İnan Kıraç Scholarship Program.
“We can only reach the 21st century with well-educated minds, and we can only integrate with Europe through properly educated youth. We should all be aware of that," Kıraç affirmed.
Saying “It is possible to overcome economic difficulties, and resolve political crises. But it is not possible to repair a society whose children are wasted,” Kıraç dreamed of a modern and prosperous country enriched by education, art, and science, and bravely took responsibility. One of the citations of hers, that summarizes her life and ideals best is as follows: “I am determined to live and carry the torch in this country. I wish I am not one of the critical but one of the criticized. I decided to be not one of those who speak, but one of those who do.”
Kıraç believed that the country needed mobilization of voluntary work to ensure the development of children and increase their knowledge and cultural level. Suna Kıraç’s words matched completely her approach as she often repeated, “The education is a big and immense problem that we cannot resolve on our own, and we cannot simply leave to the state. Therefore, we need to act as a support.”
And here is the main working principal Kıraç handed us on: “We do not make our plans based on the thick fog in front of us, but according to the bright horizons ahead.” Today, we are exactly at this point, and we act to create those bright horizons where girls will be physically and psychologically safe, where they won’t be deprived of the right to study and play, and where they will have a say about their own lives and will be supported to realize their dreams.
